football. university of maryland renewing a rivalry with west virginia. sometimes it takes a big hit to get things going. we'll check and see if the terps capitalize. >> we're tracking showers and storms over the southern great lakes. right now, pleasant, 74 at the airport. >> we've been blessed with an absolutely gorgeous day, abundant sun all over the state of maryland today. things are high and dry on doppler tonight. well to our west in the southern great lakes, there's storm activity associated with the next front which will reach us tomorrow night. but it's going to be a dry front, not going to generate showers, maybe just a couple of clouds. currently 75 downtown, 74 at b.w.i. marshall. 71 up near the state line. we did top out with a high today of 76 degrees at both the airport and inner harbor so a couple of degrees above the normal high, one degree above the normal of 77 degrees. we started with chilly temperatures, 50 degrees in the morning. this time of year you see a wide temperature spread and that's what we'll see tomorrow, as well. tonight, chilly again, mid 50s in outlying

the shooting at virginia tech, they launched an intense investigation into how they could best make their hospitals safer. they say they are once again going to be looking into safety policies here at the hospital. they say they do not have wands to wave down and check for guns every single person who comes into the hospital. they get some 80,000 visitors a week at johns hopkins. they will now look into security. meanwhile, police say there is still a crime scene here. they are continuing in the investigation and trying to look more into the background of this warren davis. derek valcourt, wjz "eyewitness news." >> thank you. we continue with andrea fujii. she's been on the scene all day and joins us now with reaction to the situation. andrea? >> reporter: good afternoon. you can see things are relatively back to normal. earlier today, these streets were blocked off and people are now traveling freely up and down east madison. take a look at what was happening earlier this afternoon. earlier, workers and visitors and just people were milling around not knowing what was going on. man

of my screen is virginia. so almost all of i-95 south of virginia would be filled up by the size of this hurricane, category 2, so it's 110 miles per hour. it was bigger than that yesterday. but still, that's still a dangerous storm. hurricane hunter aircraft still flying through the storm right now. it will continue to turn to the right. it will make a run at narangaset. will make a run at nantucket, cape cod. that will be tomorrow night at this time. right now, it's going to do a glancing blow at north carolina. what does glancing really mean? it means that we're going to pile up water along these outer banks and in many spots push that water over the top of those islands. and that could cut the islands in half. happens all the time. it also means they'll probably be water completely over all of those outer banks. that's why they evacuated those islands. that's why they did it yesterday, even though some people got in traffic jams today. larry. >> and it's only september 2nd. and september could be the worst. chad myer, always atop the scene. chad myers, our weather expert. as

there. and then there's the very red state of west virginia. democrats of course have a very, very popular governor running in joe manshun. will they put the money in that they need to win those races. one other thing republicans have to worry about, let's take a look at our map here where the democrats are targeting a few of these republican seats. there are five here that are sitting here. and of course three of them are still seats that democrats are trying to win. you've got missouri. they're spending real money there. they really think robin carnahan can beat, we'll see, not quite sure but it is a red state but it is a red state that robin carnahan very popular, raised a ton of money. kentucky, the first tea party victory was rand paul. democrats still believe that he is too weak to win that seat. we shall see. he's been leading in all the polls. jack conway has yet to be able to take a lead there. the third seat that's sort of sitting there ends up being florida. we're going to close there. take a look at this, what charlie crist said yesterday. he's now the independent, that

on the political ticker yet. talk about west virginia and the senate race there. this was the seat long held by the -- robert byrd who died earlier this year. freedom works, it's a conservative group, a grassroots organization that has provided a lot of the organization behind the tea party movement. i spoke to a couple of the people at freedom works today. they're going to get involved in the race and help with get out the vote efforts in west virginia. they think this is a seat they can grab back in the special election come november from the democrats. that's what i got. mark preston has a lot more. >> a lot of talk about the midterm elections. was the white house engaged in the elections, were they not? clearly the president and the vice president is this week. in fact, president obama is in philadelphia. he's raising money for democrats today. vice president biden is in ohio. on wednesday president obama goes to new york city for the u.n. general assembly but will also raise money for house and senate democrats. biden in massachusetts, maryland and florida over the next few days all rai

this area was founded in 1609 by sailors trying to get to virginia, and they settled here. i can tell you from 1609 to present day they know how to handle these tropical systems. they were well prepared, they were willing to accept the damage from the tree, the roof damage and the shattered windows, blocked roadways. it goes with the territory, so to speak. some of the flooding that we had along the coastline is caused by some of the nine to 12-foot waves that pushed by the wind you're going to have that. that's water is now since receded which is good news. there are other issues in terms of the main causeway in bermuda. that's shut. the airport is closed. when the winds subside, what they will do is take a team of engineers out by the causeway and check fort structural damage. if it appears sound, they will open it back up. and hopefully thereafter the airport. >> reynolds wolf doing yeoman's service in bermuda. >>> sarah shourd who spent more than a year in prison is back on u.s. soul but her heart is in iran. >> her fiance and friend are being held accused by the iranian government of
